Flora and fauna

Formentera’s forests are dominated by pine trees and junipers, while the beaches and coastal ponds are surrounded by dunes and shrubs. But below the water’s surface, a marine plant called Posidonia plays a vital role in the island’s ecosystem. The island’s fauna is diverse, with more than 210 species of birds that have found their home here, either permanently or in transit as they migrate. Additionally, the brightly coloured native lizards are one of the island’s most iconic animals, and are easy to find sunbathing anywhere.
